European RC Awards 

With the European Responsible Care Awards Cefic recognizes outstanding approaches to progress Responsible Care and Sustainable Development. All companies participating in Responsible Care are eligible; small and medium-sized businesses compete for the General Award as well as for the dedicated SME Award. The 2010 Awards scheme is open for entries until June 25.

Winners

Pentagon Chemicals (SME category):
Sustainable Development Plan which resulted into considerable waste reduction, high energy savings, a strong health and safety performance as well as a continuous community and supply chain outreach. The Judges were impressed by the clear business value of this plan and appreciated the entry as on par with any of the large company submissions. More info about the project ►

SABIC Innovative Plastics (general category):
The Jury was impressed by an innovative solution to turn used PET bottles into a raw material for durable applications and regarded the entry as an excellent demonstration on how to effectively engage in Product Stewardship. More info about the project ►

Schering-Plough (general category):
Community Engagement Programme which addresses a wide range of stakeholders and includes practical approaches such as collecting hazardous wastes from local schools and households and carrying out energy audits for local schools. More info about the project ►

European Responsible Care Awards 2008

Winners

DuPont Asturias (Spain) winner of the Large Company Award 2008:
Excellent example that saves on renewable resources and exploits the symbiosis between DuPont’s need for bio treatment nutrient feed and the need to manage a waste product at local sweet manufacturer, Chupa Chups. The Judges' Comment:"An excellent collaboration between the DuPont site and a local sweet factory with threefold benefit: waste reduction, substitution of depletable resource and significant cost savings for both companies."

BioMCN (The Netherlands) winner of the SME Award 2008:
Innovation and a commitment to sustainability are described as the drivers for BioMCN's development of a process to convert crude glycerine into bio-methanol on an industrial scale. The Judges' Comment: "An innovative approach which seeks to reduce GHG emissions and takes measures to avoid negative impacts on food production and land use which are associated with production of some bio-fuels."

BASF SE (Germany) winner of the Special Award 2008:
BASF's Carbon Balance of CO2 emissions and savings based on the lifecycle principle from cradle to grave. This global project addresses a leading societal concern – climate change – and makes BASF the world's first company to present a comprehensive carbon balance for its operations by assessing the company's carbon footprint. Judges' Comment: "Impressed that BASF is leading the development: a new global measurement approach that can be applied by companies from other business sectors to establish their own meaningful "carbon footprints". AHP Manufacturing (Ireland)
Innovative use of proven commercial techniques ensured this marketing and communications strategy on EHS issues created a safer working environment for all. Click here for more information>>

Albemarle Europe (Belgium), Chemtura, ICL Industrial Products VECAP:
Voluntary Emissions Control Action Programme of the flame retardant producers. This submission from three major flame retardant producers is backed by impressive quotes from external stakeholders, and demonstrates good cooperation between producers and users to improve chemicals management. BMS Swords Laboratories (Ireland)
A concerted effort to invest in equipment and an operating philosophy that ensures employees can handle potent pharmaceutical products without the need for PPE.

Dow Belgium BVBA (Belgium)
An exercise in ‘site water housekeeping’ at the Dow Tessenderlo site describes recuperation of rainwater and a waste water stream. A project that the judges agreed achieved major improvements in water use and recovery. Click here for more information>>

DSM Agro (The Netherlands)
This was judged as a good well-communicated project which also brought positive publicity and achieved a world record in the reduction of the greenhouse gas, nitrous oxide, at its nitric acid manufacturing plants. Click here for more information>>

DuPont de Nemours (Belgium)
This noise reduction project over a 3 year period aimed at improvements for the DuPont Mechelen site in Belgium, and responded to concerns within the local community. Click here for more information>>

Evonik Industries (Germany)
Cooperation with local farmers led Evonik to find a useful outlet for warm water from its carbon black production site: early season cultivation of asparagus. Neighbours and local media were very positive towards the project. Click here for more information>>

GlaxoSmithKline (Belgium)
‘Wellness together’ describes a comprehensive project aimed at GSK Biologicals employees and involving a number of different initiatives focused on health, safety, the environment and the community. Click here for more information>>

GlaxoSmithKline Cork (Ireland)
A very comprehensive submission on the use of pre-assembled volumes (PAVs) to reduce the risks of working at height made this a good example of how to work more safely and responsibly, and save money. Click here for more information>>

Rembrandtin Lack (Austria)
This detailed submission demonstrates how various measures over a number of years combined to achieve a major reduction in the use of organic solvents, driving down VOC emissions, improving plant safety, and reducing health risks. Click here for more information>>

European Responsible Care Award 2007

The Dow site in Terneuzen, the Netherlands has won the Cefic European Responsible Care Award 2007 for its project to reuse household wastewater for the production of demineralised water.
The Award was presented to the winner on 6 October 2007 at the Cefic Annual General Assembly in Budapest, Hungary.

The judges were also impressed by the Runner-up submission from Schering Plough (Avondale) in Ireland. The company had introduced a strong focus on sustainable chemistry and employee involvement. Efforts on site had resulted in substantial gains in terms of more efficient use of raw materials.
