R&D technology

Technological breakthroughs in the energy sector are key to tackling global climate change in the long run. They are critical for reducing Europe’s external dependency on energy and for finding new answers as the availabilities of energy sources change.

The chemical industry is not merely an energy user. Through its R&D capabilities and innovative products and processes, it is a major supplier of energy conservation solutions.

For instance, in collaboration with the transportation industry, the chemical industry provides materials crucial to the development of fuel efficient transportation, hybrid cars and hydrogen fuel cells. In the building sector, high performance insulation, long lasting sealants and energy-saving light bulbs all rely on the innovations of chemistry.

The chemical industry is also behind the development of more effective technologies to support renewable energies such as wind or solar. Thanks to the replacement of metal blades by composite ones (generally made of fiberglass-reinforced polyester), wind turbines can now stand up to the severest weather.

R&D and technology innovations are key elements in the development of an effective future energy policy. The chemical industry can play an important role in providing resources, skills, process facilitation and research capabilities. These can help deliver long-term solutions to our energy crisis.
