Health, Safety & the Environment
Responding to growing public concern over environmental, health and safety issues, Cefic has formed a number of working groups to deal with relevant issues such as waste, air, water, pollution prevention, emissions reporting or major accidental hazard prevention and mitigation. It is also devoting more of its time and resources to broader environmental and safety questions. In all its activities, it recognises the importance of innovation and best practice. As one of many stakeholders, Cefic participates in the process as new legislation is debated and prepared. Among other initiatives, Cefic is currently involved in the implementation of the Water Framework Directive, the drafting of a new Groundwater Directive and the issue of sustainable waste management. In addition, the 6th Environment Action Programme, currently being developed, will determine the EU's environment policy over the next ten years - addressing, among other things, the effect of chemical processes on soil and the marine environment. The purpose of Cefic's involvement in all of these processes is to ensure that new legislation and future policies on environment, health and safety take proper account of the realities of chemical production and downstream uses. We believe that environmental objectives should be realistic and sustainable while recognising the possibilities for improvement in innovative processes and the application of best practice. |
